Message from the Chief

Budds Dept Photo updated 2023 b - CopyThank you for visiting the Buffalo Grove Police Department website.  As your Chief of Police, I am both honored and privileged to serve this wonderful community alongside the men and women of the Police Department.

We have an outstanding and dedicated group of sworn police officers, professional support staff and volunteers who are genuinely committed to serving, protecting and educating our residents. Our agency takes tremendous pride in the positive contributions we make in maintaining the high quality of life for our residents, businesses and visitors. We are very proud of our innovative law enforcement and community outreach initiatives that help preserve our historically low crime rate.

The Buffalo Grove Police Department is currently comprised of 62 sworn police officers, 13 non-sworn (civilian) employees and nine volunteers. We have been nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 1987, and I am proud to announce that the Department recently attained its 9th consecutive reaccreditation (10th overall award) in 2021. In order to achieve and maintain accredited status, our agency’s policies and procedures must remain in compliance with national standards set forth by CALEA. This designation demonstrates our ongoing commitment to professional excellence — BGPD is one of only four percent of police agencies accredited nationwide.

Our agency participates in several multi-jurisdictional task forces which include the Drug Enforcement Agency, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, Internet Crimes Against Children, Major Crash Assistance Team and the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System.

Please take a moment to learn more about our Police Department through this website. We welcome your input and feedback. We will continue to work tirelessly to protect our community by providing creative and effective problem-solving services in partnership with our residents.

Yours truly,

Brian J. Budds
Chief of Police
