Why is there standing water in my yard? There will be times in which the Village’s stormwater system will work as expected, but still not be able to handle the amount of water. In this case, there is little to be done until the system can catch-up. But here are some things you, the homeowner, can and cannot do:
How Can I Prevent Flooding?
- Clear any debris from covered inlets.
- Drain standing water in the direction of flow.
- Widen, deepen, and clean natural depressions.
- Tile your property to expedite the flow of water.
- Straighten out channels as long the point of entry is unaffected.
- Expedite the flow of surface water through natural lines of drainage.
- Pollute any water passing through.
- Dam or obstruct a natural drainage channel.
- Open any grates or manhole lids to drain water faster.
- Change the point of entry of surface water on lower land.
- Divert water to lands that do not naturally receive drainage.
- Connect tile to another’s tile line or main line without consent.
You have questions, we have answers
Your yard could hold water for any number of reasons. It could be a covered inlet, an impediment that will not allow water to reach the inlet, or charged pipes.
Call public works at 847-459-2545. We will come and see if their is a blockage in the main line. If the line is not blocked, it is possible that the entire system is full. This means that there is no place for the water to drain at the current time. Once the system has time to drain, the water around the inlet will go down.
If you do not see an inlet and would like to be sure, you can contact public works at 847-459-2545 to have personnel check for you.
Public Works and the residents need to work together to keep inlets clear. Public Works will clean them if needed, but it is not workable to clear every inlet in the village. Thus, we ask residents to clear debris from inlets so long as it safe.
Yes. Contact the Engineering Section at 847-459-2523 to see if a utility is near your house and to start the permitting paperwork.
