The Buffalo Grove Police Department has been nationally accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) since 1987. The purpose of CALEA is to improve the delivery of public safety services primarily by maintaining a body of standards, developed by public safety practitioners, covering a wide range of initiatives. The goals are to:
Strengthen crime prevention and control capabilities
Formalize essential management procedures
Establish fair and non-discriminatory personnel practices
Improve service delivery
Solidify interagency cooperation and coordination; and
Increase community and staff confidence in the agency
The department is a leader in developing programs for the community and has been recognized for these efforts by the Illinois Department of Transportation – Division of Traffic Safety, the National Association of School Resource Officers, the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Our agency continually strives to be at the forefront of modern policing practices and empowers our employees to proactively problem solve at all levels.

Chief Casstevens has served law enforcement for 40 years, beginning his career in the Military Police with the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division. He is a graduate of Northwestern University Center for Public Safety’s School of Police Staff & Command and the 216th Session of the FBI National Academy. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Judson University and has been honored with the designation of Certified Police Chief by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.
