ANIMAL STORIES

 There are many ideas about the best way to remove a tick, one of the most common tricks being to put a lit match on the tick to make the tick "angry" enough to back out on its own. The truth is, this can actually make things worse for you and the tick; injecting more foreign material into you (or your pet) from the tick. Early removal of the tick is very important. Find out how to check for and remove ticks safely in this how to.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes
Here's How:

1. Use latex exam gloves to examine your pet for ticks. Examine using good lighting.
2. Check your pet daily for ticks by thoroughly feeling for any lumps under the hair. Pay close attention to ears, around face, eyes, legs, and belly.
3. Ticks will range in size from the size of a sesame seed to the size of a fingernail (engorged).
4. When is tick is found embedded in the skin, use a fine pointed tweezers or tick remover tool at the point of attachment, and grasp the tick head firmly and as close to the skin as possible. Remember to wear latex gloves when doing this.
5. Using slow, steady, and firm traction, pull the tick straight out from the skin.
6. It is critical to NOT squeeze the tick body at any time -- this can inject more potential pathogens in to you or your pet while the tick is embedded.
7. Cleanse the skin with mild soap and water.
8. If a small part of the tick breaks off, you can try to remove it as you would a splinter, but it is probably best to leave it alone. The body will 'eject' it in time.
9. Place the tick in a jar of alcohol, noting the date, in case of future illness. Tick identification and location of tick infestation will be important.

Apply antiseptic ointment to the bite.

Do NOT use a match or caustic materials to try to smother the tick or get the tick to "back out". This doesn't work, and may be causing the tick to regurgitate more saliva (and potential pathogens) into the skin. Same goes for "smothering" the tick with petroleum jelly or similar material. Talk to your vet about effective tick control (spray, powder, spot-on, or collar) for your pet. FLEA & TICK CONTROL products can also be found at local pet stores. Check pet daily, especially in the spring when ticks are most common.

What You Need:
Latex gloves
Good pair of tweezers
Soap and water
Jar or plastic bag to label and save removed tick

STUFF FROM THE STATION

New Stuff:

The following is from one of our readers and she makes what I believe is a good point;

I've been seeing a lot of bike riders with both headphones on this summer and, as a driver and mother, it scares the heck out of me! I wish it were a law that if you are on any kind of moving vehicle that you cannot tune out other noise. This is especially dangerous when riding in the street. Please tell your readers how dangerous this can be!

Thank you!

BUFFALO GROVE POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES A NEW PROGRAM FOR RESIDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Chief of Police Steve S. Balinski is proud to announce a new program designed to assist locating special needs residents who may go missing. Utilizing monies from the Village's Alcohol Awareness and Education Fund and donations from Buffalo Grove Friends of the Park Foundation, Belmont Village Senior Living, Sunrise Assisted Living, and the Northwest Community Hospital, the Buffalo Grove Police Department purchased a Care Trak Emergency Response Kit.

The Care Trak equipment utilizes radio transmitters to locate individuals with Alzheimer's, Autism, Down syndrome, and similar disabilities, who may wander away. The program is available to residents who meet the guidelines, which include having a full-time caregiver. Families meeting the pre-established criteria can purchase a water resistant transmitter the size of a wrist watch. The transmitter attaches to the individual's wrist or ankle by a strong band and continually emits a pulsating radio signal. If the special needs individual fitted with a transmitter goes missing, the caregiver will immediately contact the police.

After notification of a missing person, trained Buffalo Grove Police officers will deploy two portable telemetry tracking receivers. The tracking system includes hand-held directional antennas and digital receivers designed to locate the specific signal from the transmitter. The signal can be located within one mile and is sensitive enough to track inside homes, in dense brush or within large buildings. The radio frequency equipment provided by Care Trak is more precise than GPS and will work in all weather conditions. The ultimate goal is to find special needs individuals as quickly as possible and return them home safely.

Buffalo Grove residents interested in receiving more information about the program or who would like to begin the screening process, may contact the Police Department's Crime Prevention unit at 847-459-2560 or via e-mail at police@vbg.org.

Our front desk has been getting numerous calls asking for the curfew hours for drivers under the age of eighteen. This information and other driver related topics are available by going to www.cyberdriveillinois.com.

However, since I know the information I will let you know that the driving curfew for those under eighteen year of age is;
Sunday to Thursday from 10pm to 6am and
Friday and Saturday from 11pm to 6am.

What this means is that the person's driver's license is no longer valid during the curfew hours, and if stopped, will be charged with driving without a valid driver's license.
