Safety tips for the Summer Holidays

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. It is also the unofficial start of summer, and as you head to the beach, the pool, or to the mountains for a camping vacation, we encourage you and your family to keep safety in mind!

On the Road

? Buckle up

?
Pay attention, more vehicles will be on the road, including an influx of motorcyclists.

?
Drive at safe speeds. Leave enough travel time in advance to avoid the urge to speed.

?
Use a designated driver; if you plan on drinking, plan on a safe and sober ride.

?
On the way back, drive well-rested, be patient, and remember roads will be congested.

Sun Safety

? Avoid sun exposure during the hottest hours of the sun’s rays.

?
Apply sunscreen with a SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15, paying special attention to the face, nose, ears and shoulders.

?
Wear a hat.

?
Wear sunglasses with UV (Ultraviolet) Protection.

?
Drink plenty of water and non-carbonated drinks, even if you do not feel thirsty.

Grilling Safety

? Always read the use and care manual before operating your grill.

?
Never leave grill unattended when in use.

?
Preheat grill to no higher than medium-high. Temperature of grill should be 400 to 450°F because high heat and excess fat can cause flare-ups.

?
If flare-ups do occur, move food to a cooler spot on the grill or temporarily cut off the air supply by closing lid or shutting the air vents.

?
To avoid flare-ups you should drain off excess marinade or oil before putting food on grill, trim excess fat to 1/4-inch on steaks and chops, and remove skin and excess fat from chicken pieces.

Water Safety

? Swim in supervised areas only.

?
Obey all rules and posted signs.

?
Don't mix alcohol and swimming. Alcohol impairs your judgment, balance, and

coordination, affects your swimming and diving skills, and reduces your body's ability to stay

warm.

?
Stop swimming at the first indication of bad weather.

Remember to make safety awareness part of your summer holiday planning. A moment's inattention is all it takes for an accident to happen. Be prepared by being aware of potential summer holiday dangers.

Running Stuff:

Our front desk has been getting numerous calls asking for the curfew hours for drivers under the age of eighteen. This information and other driver related topics are available by going to www.cyberdriveillinois.com.

However, since I know the information I will let you know that the driving curfew for those under eighteen year of age is;
Sunday to Thursday from 10pm to 6am and
Friday and Saturday from 11pm to 6am.

What this means is that the person's driver's license is no longer valid during the curfew hours, and if stopped, will be charged with driving without a valid driver's license.

BUFFALO GROVE POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES A NEW PROGRAM FOR RESIDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Chief of Police Steve S. Balinski is proud to announce a new program designed to assist locating special needs residents who may go missing. Utilizing monies from the Village's Alcohol Awareness and Education Fund and donations from Buffalo Grove Friends of the Park Foundation, Belmont Village Senior Living, Sunrise Assisted Living, and the Northwest Community Hospital, the Buffalo Grove Police Department purchased a Care Trak Emergency Response Kit.

The Care Trak equipment utilizes radio transmitters to locate individuals with Alzheimer's, Autism, Down syndrome, and similar disabilities, who may wander away. The program is available to residents who meet the guidelines, which include having a full-time caregiver. Families meeting the pre-established criteria can purchase a water resistant transmitter the size of a wrist watch. The transmitter attaches to the individual's wrist or ankle by a strong band and continually emits a pulsating radio signal. If the special needs individual fitted with a transmitter goes missing, the caregiver will immediately contact the police.

After notification of a missing person, trained Buffalo Grove Police officers will deploy two portable telemetry tracking receivers. The tracking system includes hand-held directional antennas and digital receivers designed to locate the specific signal from the transmitter. The signal can be located within one mile and is sensitive enough to track inside homes, in dense brush or within large buildings. The radio frequency equipment provided by Care Trak is more precise than GPS and will work in all weather conditions. The ultimate goal is to find special needs individuals as quickly as possible and return them home safely.

Buffalo Grove residents interested in receiving more information about the program or who would like to begin the screening process, may contact the Police Department's Crime Prevention unit at 847-459-2560 or via e-mail at police@vbg.org.

A local bank official has reported that some residents have received text messages, supposedly from the local bank, requesting the validation of the residents' account information. The bank official stated that this is a scam.

I would like to emphasize that no bank will request the verification of account information over the phone, by text message or by email. The bank already has all of your information and certainly does not need to have it verified.

If you receive such a request and you are not sure what you should do (ignore and delete), call your bank.
