ANIMAL STORIES
De-Skunking Your Dog
Skunks are everywhere—in the country and in the city. If your dog gets sprayed, there are ways you can rid him of the scent without using your entire ketchup (or tomato juice) supply to do it.
Over-the-counter products such as Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover, which is available at most specialty pet retailers, are a quick fix, but if you don't have that on hand, try the following:
Step 1: Keep Fido outside
While you prepare the de-skunking solution, keep your dog outside after he's sprayed so he doesn't carry the smell into your house. Check his eyes; if they're irritated or red, immediately flush them with cool water.
Step 2: Mix the Ingredients
Mix together:
1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide (available at your local pharmacy)
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap
Wearing rubber gloves, wash your dog with this solution immediately after he's been sprayed. DO NOT get the solution in the dog's eyes. (If you don't have peroxide, baking soda, and liquid soap on hand, use vinegar diluted with water.)
Caution: Do NOT save this mixture or make it ahead of time, as the mixture could explode if left in a bottle.
Step 3: Clean and rinse
Rub the mixture through his fur, but don't leave it on him too long (peroxide can bleach his fur). Rinse him thoroughly.
Step 4: Shampoo
Next, wash your dog with pet shampoo and rinse thoroughly. By now, he should be de-skunked and smelling sweet. Thoroughly towel-dry your dog, and be sure to place him in a warm, sunny room for the next couple of hours so that he doesn't get chilled. He should also have a large dry towel on which to lie down. If you dog has long fur, you may need to use a hair dryer to dry his fur.
Owner cleanup
If your dog rubbed some of the stink onto you, you can rid your clothes of the smell by using regular laundry detergent mixed with a half-cup of baking soda.
STUFF FROM THE STATION
New Stuff:
My partner and I completed the conference on Elder Abuse and Exploitation and I believe that we picked up some good information that will help us in dealing with our senior residents.
Our front desk has been getting numerous calls asking for the curfew hours for drivers under the age of eighteen. This information and other driver related topics are available by going to www.cyberdriveillinois.com.
However, since I know the information I will let you know that the driving curfew for those under eighteen year of age is;
Sunday to Thursday from 10pm to 6am and
Friday and Saturday from 11pm to 6am.
What this means is that the person's driver's license is no longer valid during the curfew hours, and if stopped, will be charged with driving without a valid driver's license.
Running Stuff:
BUFFALO GROVE POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES A NEW PROGRAM FOR RESIDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Chief of Police Steve S. Balinski is proud to announce a new program designed to assist locating special needs residents who may go missing. Utilizing monies from the Village's Alcohol Awareness and Education Fund and donations from Buffalo Grove Friends of the Park Foundation, Belmont Village Senior Living, Sunrise Assisted Living, and the Northwest Community Hospital, the Buffalo Grove Police Department purchased a Care Trak Emergency Response Kit.
The Care Trak equipment utilizes radio transmitters to locate individuals with Alzheimer's, Autism, Down syndrome, and similar disabilities, who may wander away. The program is available to residents who meet the guidelines, which include having a full-time caregiver. Families meeting the pre-established criteria can purchase a water resistant transmitter the size of a wrist watch. The transmitter attaches to the individual's wrist or ankle by a strong band and continually emits a pulsating radio signal. If the special needs individual fitted with a transmitter goes missing, the caregiver will immediately contact the police.
After notification of a missing person, trained Buffalo Grove Police officers will deploy two portable telemetry tracking receivers. The tracking system includes hand-held directional antennas and digital receivers designed to locate the specific signal from the transmitter. The signal can be located within one mile and is sensitive enough to track inside homes, in dense brush or within large buildings. The radio frequency equipment provided by Care Trak is more precise than GPS and will work in all weather conditions. The ultimate goal is to find special needs individuals as quickly as possible and return them home safely.
Buffalo Grove residents interested in receiving more information about the program or who would like to begin the screening process, may contact the Police Department's Crime Prevention unit at 847-459-2560 or via e-mail at police@vbg.org.
A local bank official has reported that some residents have received text messages, supposedly from the local bank, requesting the validation of the residents' account information. The bank official stated that this is a scam.
I would like to emphasize that no bank will request the verification of account information over the phone, by text message or by email. The bank already has all of your information and certainly does not need to have it verified.
If you receive such a request and you are not sure what you should do (ignore and delete), call your bank.

The National Law Enforcement Challenge results have been posted. This year the Buffalo Grove Police Department won two awards at the National level. Buffalo Grove won first place in the 46-75 sworn officer category and also won a special recognition for our Bicycle/Pedestrian safety program. This makes a total of five state and national traffic safety awards won by the Buffalo Grove Police Department for 2009/2010.
The National Law Enforcement Challenge provides law enforcement agencies with an opportunity to make a significant difference in the communities they serve. The Challenge is a friendly competition between similar sizes and types of law enforcement agencies that recognizes and rewards the best overall traffic safety programs in the United States.
The program is designed to strengthen and support traffic enforcement nationwide and targets three major traffic safety priorities: occupant protection impaired driving, and speeding. Participating agencies are asked to provide documentation on their agency's efforts and effectiveness in areas of officer training, public information, and enforcement to reduce crashes and injuries.
Police Chief Steve Balinski stated that this is another example of the Buffalo Grove Police Department's "Commitment to Excellence" that represents an important community value toward roadway safety and is reflective of great community policing efforts that the men and women of the Buffalo Grove Police Department provide to the Village of Buffalo Grove on a daily basis.
This is great news!
Whenever anyone needs to contact a Police Department, the best option is to always dial 911.
There can be a circumstance, where you must contact the Buffalo Grove Police Department on an emergency basis, but you are out of the department's calling area. When dialing 911 you are forwarded to the nearest police department. In such a case our new 10 digit emergency phone number is 847-590-3472.
Special Note to Multi-Dweling Units and Businesses. If your Multi-Dwelling Unit or Business has an auto-dial phone, for example in a swimming pool area or an elevator or an emergency phone, please have the owner or management company check these phones to make sure that they are dialing the new 10 digit emergency phone number of 847-590-3472. Many of these phones were dialing the old 10 digit number which is scheduled to be eliminated. The reason for the elimination of the old number and the re-direction to the new number is that the old number was not passing the name and address of the location of the incident to the 911 dispatchers. This created a challenge for the first responders to assist in the event of an emergency.
