STUFF FROM THE STATION
New Stuff:
My partner and I will not be at work tomorrow so there will be no Blotter. I hope the withdrawal will not be too bad. I will catch you up on Monday. Have a great and safe weekend.
If you are interested in checking to see if there are registered sex offenders in your area, you can do so by going to www.isp.state.il.us/sor.
Running Stuff:
The gridlock in Buffalo Grove itself can be ridiculous at times. Much of this gridlock can be attributed to people "Blocking the Box."
For those who don't know what the term means, "blocking the box" is when someone enters an intersection but is unable to get through the intersection before the light turns red.... thus blocking the intersecting streets' traffic from proceeding through the intersection once their light turns green.
When you block the box, you're not really getting yourself to your destination any faster. But you are preventing other people from getting to theirs. You're needlessly tying up traffic in a way that causes congestion to cascade into side streets and disrupts whole neighborhoods. You're showing a profound lack of respect for the rights of other people.
And, what's worse, you're preventing emergency vehicles-ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars-from reaching the scene of a crash or a crime, with potentially tragic results.
Illinois law prohibits blocking the intersection. Drivers are not supposed to enter an intersection unless you know you can safely pass completely through it before the light turns red.
A major construction project has begun on Route 53. I.D.O.T. is replacing all of the north and southbound traffic lanes from Dundee to Algonquin Road this summer. As a result west bound traffic on Dundee Road is backing up to and past Arlington Heights Road during the evening rush hour. Impatient drivers are not waiting for the far side of the intersection to clear and as a result are "Blocking the Box". When the lights change cross traffic is unable to proceed which then causes significant back ups on Arlington Heights Road.
Buffalo Grove police officers will be monitoring this location and will be citing drivers who block the box.
So the next time you come to an intersection with a yellow light, or one where the light is green but the street ahead is already full of cars . . . stop, relax, and wait for things to clear-even if that means waiting for the next green light and Don't Block the Box.
Join the Buffalo Grove Park District for a Flag Day Celebration and War Dog Memorial Dedication on Monday June 14th at 5:30pm at Veteran's Park, 1300 North Weiland Road.
The Buffalo Grove Police Department's K9 Officer Baron and her new partner K9 Chance will be there to meet and greet. Don't get too close, Chance had his bite training recently and I understand that he passed with flying colors. By the way, it was an oral exam.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is upping the ante on I-290/Route 53 road construction.
IDOT will begin resurfacing 7 miles of the highway between Higgins and Rand roads on Wednesday.
Southbound drivers will be hit first with permanent daytime lane closures between now and Aug. 27.
Next, northbound drivers will feel the joy of reduced lanes from Aug. 27 through Oct. 29.
The project also includes bridge work, drainage upgrades and patching.
The Higgins-Rand work adds on to a massive redo of the Eisenhower stretching from downtown to Thorndale Avenue in Itasca. The transportation department also is resurfacing I-355 from Army Trail Road to I-290. This project will be stretched over two years.
The agency cautioned drivers to follow the posted speed limit in work zones.
For more information on the road work, call (847) 705-4696 or visit dot.il.gov/I290/overview.

Remember to lock your car and your house, and don't leave anything inside your car that you don't want to lose. The bad guys look for purses left on the seat or the floor. If you must leave your purse, put it into the locked trunk.
