In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week.

National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

May 15th - National Peace Officers Memorial Day
In tribute to the law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to voice our appreciation for all those who currently serve, May 15th is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, which is one of only two days each year during which government agencies, businesses, and residents are to fly their U.S. flags at half staff.  (Public Law 103-322)

Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice
Today, more than 900,000 U.S. law enforcement officers put their lives on the line for the safety and protection of others. Each year, there are approximately 60,000 assaults on law enforcement officers, resulting in nearly 16,000 injuries. Sadly, over the last decade, an average of 151 officers a year have been killed in the line of duty. Throughout U.S. history, more than 21,000 law enforcement officers made the ultimate sacrifice.
  Fallen Officer Facts & Figures
On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 63 hours. Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1791, more than 21,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.
